More than one hundred keen football players donned their boots when they took part in the Woking five-a-side football tournament, Community Against Racism, as part of Kick Racism Out of Football week.
Woking’s Mayor Cllr Bryan Cross opened the tournament at the Woking Leisure Centre and two of Woking Football Club’s players made an appearance in support of the event. Kick-off on Friday, 12 October was at 4pm, with students from St John the Baptist, Bishop David Brown, Winston Churchill and Woking High schools competing for glory. Boys and girls from Years 7, 8 and 9 received medals for taking part, with trophies awarded to the winning teams.
The event is a joint project led by Surrey Police with Woking Borough Council, Woking Football Club and Azzurri Sports. Youth Affairs Officer, PC Craig Matthews said: “This year’s competition was a great success; the kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the standard of football was very high. The tournament is a great opportunity for kids from all backgrounds to have fun together while promoting the message that racism in football or anywhere else is unacceptable and we have a shared responsibility in stamping it out.”
